If you’re in your third trimester and wondering when labor is going to start, you’re not alone, bestie! That “Is this it?” feeling can be real. So let’s break down five signs your body might be getting ready to bring baby earthside (without jumping the gun and running to the hospital too early 😉).
1. You Feel More Pressure Down Low
This pressure is often a result of the baby “dropping” or descending deeper into your pelvis, a process called lightening. It usually means the baby is getting into position for delivery. You might notice it’s easier to breathe now since your lungs have more space, but you’ll also feel like there’s a bowling ball between your legs. It can increase your urge to pee or cause pelvic discomfort. Lightening can happen a few weeks before labor (especially in first pregnancies), or closer to labor in repeat pregnancies. This shift means your baby is getting into position, even if labor is still a few weeks away.
2. You’re Losing Your Mucus Plug
Your mucus plug has been like a little gatekeeper at your cervix all pregnancy long, working overtime to block bacteria and protect your baby. As your cervix begins to efface (thin out) and dilate (open up), that plug may slip out.
It might look like thick, snot-like discharge, be creamy or clear, or even show up with streaks of blood (hello, bloody show 👋🏽). While it’s a classic sign that labor is approaching, it doesn’t mean it’s starting right at that moment. Some people lose it days or even weeks before contractions begin. Either way, it’s your body’s way of saying you’re getting closer to meeting your baby.
3. Contractions Are Coming On… Kinda
Those mild tightenings you’re feeling might be Braxton Hicks contractions, aka “practice contractions.” They’re irregular, often go away with rest or hydration, and don’t get stronger over time. But when they become more consistent, intense, and closer together, you may be moving into early labor. A good rule? Time them using an app like “Full Term.” If they last 60 seconds, come every 5 minutes, and continue for an hour, that could mean it’s time to call your provider.
4. Back Pain Is Back With a Vengeance

Unlike the usual pregnancy backache, labor-related back pain is usually lower down and may come and go in waves. This can be caused by baby settling into a posterior position (facing your belly), creating pressure on your lower spine. If it feels rhythmic or paired with tightening sensations, it might be referred pain from uterine contractions. Use a birth ball, warm compress, or try hands-and-knees positions to relieve the pressure.
5. A Gut Feeling Something Is Changing
Your intuition deserves some credit. Sometimes your body sends subtle emotional or behavioral signals, you may feel extra weepy, energized to nest, or have a sudden urge to unplug. These changes are often tied to hormonal shifts in preparation for labor. You might also notice looser stools, nausea, or even a burst of energy (called the “labor surge”). All signs your body is gearing up!
